Sometimes this stuff is called Brazilian Lemonade. You can make it with either lemons or limes, but I really prefer the limeade version.
My sister-in-law is from Mexico. My brother tells me that it almost seems like Mexicans don’t believe lemons exist. Do they even have a word for “lemon?” Because the word for lime is “limon.”
He also tells me that his Mexican in-laws use limes for everything. They are squeezed over almost every dish. They are good for upset stomachs and any number of other ailments. They are great for cleaning your hair. (My own in-laws have their own version of this with the miracle mineral called bentonite. You can brush you teeth with it, lubricate the tractor, and the stuff will clear your heartburn right up.)
But let’s face it, limes kind of are a miracle. And they taste amazing. Which is why when I made my Brazilian Lemonade, I made it with limes.
Gosh, I love limeade.
I have a Blendtec blender and I really love it. If you have a regular blender, you can blend this lemonade up really easily, but the Blendtec does a little too good a job of it. So if you use a high-powered blender, pulse gently.
No one wants that bitter pith in their lemonade.
You know what this limeade is good for? Barbecues. And summer afternoons in the garden. And road trips and birthday parties and pretty much any other kind of day you can think of.
Now that I have discovered it, I’ll probably be making it every single day for at least a month.
Condensed Milk Limeade
Ingredients
- 4 limes
- 1/2 lemon
- 4 -5 cups water
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 6 tablespoons condensed milk
Instructions
- Wash limes and lemon and rinse thoroughly before using. Remove ends from limes and lemon, and cut into eighths. (Leave skins on!)
- Place lime and lemon pieces in a blender with water and sugar. If using a high-power blender such as a Blendtec, Vitamix, or Ninja, pulse the mixutre 6-7 times. If using a regular blender, a longer blending time may be needed.
- Pour mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a pitcher, and discard the pieces left in the sieve.
- Add condensed milk, and use a wooden spoon to stir until well-combined.
- Refrigerate, and serve chilled.
Love the idea of using condensed milk to get it really creamy! I’ve never had a limeade to be honest — I’ve obviously been missing out!
