True story: A ton of my friends tell me Halloween is their favorite holiday. But me? Not so much.
In fact, I kind of hate Halloween. I hate spending money on candy and coming up with costumes for my kids, and dealing with candy wrappers all over the house.
I do like passing out candy, though. And I like the decorations. But that’s about it.
It seems like Halloween is always hectic. Is that just me? Between the school parties for the kids, and trying to get everyone into their costumes, and get some actual dinner in them, and the trick-or-treating, and visiting the grandparents, and passing out candy… there is just a lot to do. It’s always a busy night.
I mean, let’s face it, sometimes a girl needs a break.
Let me be more specific: Sometimes, on Halloween, a mom needs 10 minutes to herself, so she doesn’t lose her cool. We all know what that looks like, and it ain’t pretty. It might be the scariest part of Halloween, actually.
Here’s what you do…
First, you prepare in advance by going to Target and picking up a PEOPLE Magazine while you’re buying your Halloween candy. There’s even a coupon which you can find below (while supplies last) which will save you a couple bucks when you buy PEOPLE Magazine and Hershey’s dish candy.

You also pick up a few more supplies, like Hershey’s Special Dark candy bars, to put together a little snack that is strictly for you.
Can we just pause for a moment and talk about how cute the Hershey’s dish candy is on my side table with my fall flowers? Okay, pause over. Moving on.
If you do this right, you can keep the kids sticky little fingers out of your snack without too much trouble.
The right way is to make a snack with a slightly more sophisticated flavor profile.
I asked my friends about things they like to eat and their kids don’t, and they came up with these three gems: coconut, pistachios, and dark chocolate. Let’s think like a kid here for a second. If you have a bag full of Halloween candy, and your mom has a bowl full of snacks with coconut in them… what are you going to choose?
See what I mean?
This way, right between cleaning up your Halloween dinner and passing out Hershey’s bars to trick-or-treaters, you can grab a few minutes of blissful snacking and reading PEOPLE magazine.
And when the kids walk in the door, and say, “Ooh, snacks! Can we have some?,” you can just reply with “You wouldn’t like it. It has pistachios in it.”
I think I’m starting to like Halloween better already.

Brilliant!! A bowl full of goodness they don’t even like 🙂 I love your jar vase with the burlap on it – so perfect for fall!!
Halloween does seem to get crazy, but I do love this time of year. Not so much spending money on a costume that the kids only wear one day though. Last year I told my kids to make something using things we already had…they did pretty good. We’ll see how this year goes. Now this snack mix…I need a huge bowl for sure!!! Yum!
LOVE. IT. 🙂
Oh I like your logic. Not that I have kids, but someday I could use this tactic 😉
This looks so good! Pistachios are my favorites too. I think my kids will enjoy helping out with this. Thanks for sharing this recipe !

You are awesome because you purposely put things in dessert to deter your children from eating it. Yes all around! You’re brilliant. And these muddy buddies look yuuuuuuumy. Thankfully I like coconut and pistachio so you’ll have to slap my hand away if you want it all to yourself.
