Butterscotch Popcorn

Butterscotch popcorn recipe;  You’ll love this easy and simple butterscotch popcorn recipe.

Butterscotch Popcorn from JensFavoriteCookies.comMy kids have the worst teeth.  You wouldn’t believe some of the things my dentist, orthodontist, and oral surgeon have told me.

Yeah, we have an oral surgeon.  No biggie.

Whenever we go to the dentist, the Lizard (kid #1) is the favorite.  He has no cavities, and no need of braces.  Of course, he doesn’t brush his teeth much, either, but that doesn’t seem to be causing him any problems.  He does have one weird little quirk.  The dentist’s exact words: “His teeth look like jelly beans.  Sideways jelly beans.”  Which really means nothing, except that sometimes it feels like he has a cavity, when he really doesn’t.

The Hippie Chick (kid #3) inherited an underbite.  She requires one round of braces for the underbite, and a second for teeth straightening after her molars all come in.

The Fruitarian (kid #2) is the worst.  This poor kid actually had NINE teeth surgically removed from his face, including wisdom teeth, when he was NINE years old.  He also gets one round of braces to pull his seriously weird malformed front incisor into place, and a second round for teeth straightening.

Let’s just simplify this whole story by condensing it to my favorite phrases spoken by the dentist/orthodontist/oral surgeon.

“I learned about this at school, but I’ve never seen it before.” {Referring to dens-en-dente, which means tooth inside a tooth.  Just look it up or you’ll never believe this is real.}
“We removed this perfectly formed adult incisor from his face.” {unspoken: and left him this malformed incisor to spend the rest of his life with.}
“We offer a discount on the second round of braces.”
“Your son’s teeth are shaped like jelly beans.  And your other son’s teeth are shaped like sideways jelly beans.”
“Only 1% of white people have an underbite.” {It’s just like winning the lottery.}
“The tooth is hooked, and so is the root.”

So we have three kids and four rounds of braces.  The Fruitarian is convinced that teeth problems are the very worst kind of problems a person could have.  I’m convinced that he’s lacking in life experience.

The orthodontist gave us a list of foods that kids with braces should not eat.  It’s things like suckers and gum and caramel popcorn.  So me?  I made Butterscotch Popcorn.  Because it’s super easy and tasty… for those of us not in braces.

Maybe the rest of us could eat it before the Fruitarian notices it’s there.

Ingredients
  • 6 cups popped popcorn
  • 6 oz. butterscotch chips

  1. Combine butterscotch chips, corn syrup, and butter and heat just to boiling.
  2. Pour over popcorn. Stir to coat.

I like air-popped popcorn. Yields vary depending on brand, but in general I find that ½ cup unpopped kernels yields about 6-7 cups popped.

    Ugh with the teeth, both my kids need braces, will be going down that road soon. But this popcorn, wow, what an awesome idea! This looks easy and a fun treat everyone will love.

    While brushing my 6 year old’s teeth last week, I freaked out when I noticed that his permanent teeth were shooting up behind his baby teeth. I thought it was an emergency. It’s not. They call it shark teeth. I call it the beginning of braces purgatory…..

    In the meantime, I’m making this. I had a sordid love affair with butterscotch chips last fall. I think we need to reconnect.

    Dental problems are the worst! Well, not as bad as the Fruitairian thinks, but pretty bad. But this Butterscotch Popcorn is the best! I guess all things even out in life. 😉 Thanks for an interesting post.

    I’ve been reading up on xylitol for dental purposes. I wonder if it could be applied here. Basically its a sweetener, acts much like sugar. But its good for your teeth! So, my thought was what if one were to make the above recipe with xylitol sweetened products. Might get the frutarians approval.
