These snickerdoodles are made with molasses and ginger, a perfect snickerdoodles recipe for the holidays!
We recently made the decision to rid our home of television.
Actually, what happened was that Robb wanted to do it, and I whined, cried, and threw a tantrum. Because I’m kind of a tv addict.
I told the kids that I’m really happy with the situation, you know, to be a good family leader and stuff, but what I’m really thinking is how sad I am about missing the new seasons of The Office and Criminal Minds. {And DO NOT spoil it for me… I’m going to find a way to watch them later.}
The kids have actually been great at inventing ways to amuse themselves. They play a lot of board games, read a lot of books, and we’ve heard “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey on the piano at least 3 or 4 hundred thousand times. (I’m starting to wish they’d go back to playing the Mario Brothers theme, if that tells you anything about how desperate the situation is.)
Today, they wanted to bake cookies. “Great idea,” I said.
The Hippie Chick told me she wanted to make a double batch, because our cookies are always in small batches and always gone too fast. I reminded her of the reason for that situation. I bake cookies every week. We don’t need a double batch.
But, her cookies, her rules. She made a double batch.
I did successfully manage to convince the kids to make a cookie they had never made before… Molasses Snickerdoodles. I got this recipe from my grandmother some time ago, but have never made them. They’ve been on my mind lately, because it’s all cold and autumnal outside.
And because I’m tired of apples and pumpkin, so I’m turning to molasses and ginger.
Another fun fact about this project: Hippie Chick literally asked me if she could have a root beer float while she was waiting for her cookies to bake.
Me: You want a root beer float for lunch and a cookie for dessert?!
Hippie Chick: {giggling} Yes!
Me: Can I interest you in some spinach? Or at least a peanut butter sandwich?
Hippie Chick: I’ll just wait for the cookies to come out.
Perhaps we’re a touch sugar-addicted around here. Maybe it’s time I start blogging about salads.
- ¾ cup shortening
- 1 cup sugar
- ¼ cup molasses
- 1 egg
- 2 tsp. baking soda
- ½ tsp. cloves
- ½ tsp. ginger
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- ½ tsp. salt
- 2 cups flour
- Cream shortening, sugar, molasses and egg.
- Sift dry ingredients together, then add to sugar mixture and mix until combined.
- Form into balls and roll in sugar. Place on baking sheet and bake at 375 degrees for 7-9 minutes.

These look and sound SO good! Do you think I could substitute butter for shortening?
I’m sure you could. You might have to add a bit more flour to compensate for the extra moisture in the butter, and I would definitely chill the dough for a couple hours before baking. You’ll have to let me know how it turns out!

Wanted to say congrats on getting rid of the T.V. My parents got rid of ours when I was 7. That was 1982. It was hard missing out on some of the ’80’s hit shows, but by far the best decision my parents made. I look back on my childhood with fond memories. Your children will too, no doubt.
I got a snickerdoodle recipe from a friend in the US a few years ago. With the spices, these look much more my kind of thing, however. Definitely a recipe I will copy and keep. Thanks!

Butter flavor Crisco is exactly what I used. I don’t like the regular stuff nearly as well as the butter flavor!
