For probably two years, we have not had any tv at our house. No cable, no satellite, not even Netflix. Just one gaming system and one BluRay player.
This week, we finally entered this decade and splurged on a Netflix subscription.
Not a moment too soon, either. It happened just as Robb got the flu. He spent days feeling achy and tired and complaining about his inability to breathe. He spent a couple evenings laying on the couch with the remote in his hand.
Next was The Lizard. His bedroom is right beneath ours, and we heard him coughing and coughing at 4 in the morning. I sent him to school with a handful of cough drops and a package of Kleenex.
Hippie Chick was next. This girl literally called me from school during first period yesterday. “I know school just barely started,” she began, “but I’m really sick.”
I guess it’s officially winter.
I took myself to Target with my handy-dandy coupon and stocked up on Kleenex. You can do the same, you know. Get your coupon here, while supplies last.
I figured the packed sinuses and sore throats in this house could use something warm to drink, something soothing and creamy. I pulled out a pot to start mixing it up, but then thought better of it. After all, half the family was napping, and the other half would probably be napping soon. So I pulled out the slow cooker and went to work.
The nice thing about using the slow cooker is that the cocoa can just warm and simmer for a couple hours or more, so when the sick ones are ready for cocoa, the cocoa is ready for them.
You can put a few mugs on a tray with a box of Kleenex, some super mini marshmallow bits, and some Peppermint Sticks, grab some blankets and slippers, and you are all set for an hour or two of television.
And coughing. And sniffling. And nose blowing. And sleeping.
Welcome to flu season, my friends.

Feel better to you and yours…I wish I would have done this over the weekend with my sick crew.
Made molasses cookies instead.
Sorry to hear everyone is sick! Peppermint is one of my favorite flavors for Christmas. Once I have my first cup, it puts me in the Christmas spirit.
Hello,
I have a couple of questions. The milk, is it whole milk. Can it be skim or even almond?
I’m throwing an all girls Christmas party. I think this would be a great addition.
Especially for the women that don’t like/ want wine. 🙂
Gorgeous photos and a wonderful beverage too!
Damn – cocoa in the slow cooker. Genius! It looks so rich ‘n creamy! Welcome to the sweet wonderful world of Netflix, Jen. I can’t live without tv. When I moved into my apartment w/ the Hubs five years ago, I told him I didn’t give a damn about furniture so long as I had a tv. Good thing you have thousands of programs to keep you company while the family’s sick. And a slow cooker full of yummy soothing cocoa, of course.
