Chocolate Chip Cookie Muddy Buddies

This muddy buddies recipe uses chocolate chip cookies!  Popcorn and pretzels also make this muddy buddies recipe a fun one.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Muddy Buddies from JensFavoriteCookies.com - popcorn, pretzels, and cookie bark make this fun version of the classic snack!True story:  just this spring, we purchased air conditioning and a brand spanking new furnace.  Isn’t is exciting being an adult, and spending thousands of dollars on a furnace?!

Then, it quit working.  And did it quit working on a day when it’s 80 degrees and overcast?  Of course not.  It’s quits working on Friday evening, just before a whole weekend of 100 degree, full blazing sun weather.

Don’t worry… a faulty valve was to blame, and our awesome contractor had it fixed in no time, (and by “no time” of course, I mean that the poor guy spent a couple hours in full sun, mid-afternoon on the south side of my house when it was 100 degrees) so we’re cool now, but it was a rough weekend.

On top of that, when I went out for popsicles and frozen hot chocolate, the brand spankin’ new radiator in my car sprang a leak and left a lake of antifreeze in the drive up window at the sandwich shop.  It took me more than an hour to nurse my poor overheating car about 3 miles home.

Maybe you saw me feeling grateful for the nearby condo complex which decided to water their lawn in the middle of the day?  It was the only way we managed to stay cool after an hour of full sun and running the heater.  I seriously felt like I was doomed to a life of sweating.  (So this is hell, eh?)

I can tell you one thing, I was not not NOT going to use the oven.  Or the stove.  I was even apprehensive about using the air popper to make popcorn.

So, we ate muddy buddies.  Hooray!

This particular version, in addition to the expected Chex cereal, also has popcorn and pretzels, and chocolate chip cookie bark.  If you’re not familiar with the cookie bark, I highly recommend you check that out here.  You can also use crunchy packaged cookies, but cookie bark is ever so much tastier.

I was fortunate to have some in my pantry.

I actually had to take a cold shower to cool down after that little disaster of a trip to the store.

Between the cool water and the chocolatey treats, my mood recovered much more quickly than my car did!

Caramel Corn Snack Mix

The best caramel corn recipe can be used on more than just popcorn!  And pecans and cereal for a fun snack mix!

Caramel Corn Snack Mix from JensFavoriteCookies.com - this mix includes cereal and pecans for a delicious snack!

I burned myself making this popcorn for you.

Oh, how I sacrifice for my craft!

Let’s just say, when this candy comes off the stove it is very very hot.  Be forewarned. Was it worth it?  Yes.  Yes, it was.  Because caramel corn is good, but caramel corn plus chex and pecans is great.  Fantastic.  Amazing, even.

And speaking of sacrifice… do you know how hard it is to make this gorgeous, crunchy caramel and then NOT eat it immediately?  I promised my family I would bring snacks to the family get together this month, so into a lidded container this whole batch went.

*sniff*  *wipes tear*

Here’s a little insight into my life as a dessert blogger.  When my kids come home from school/work/friends/misc. activities, they say something like, “Mmm, it smells like…” insert something here like “peanut butter” or “caramel” or “cookies.”  This is immediately followed by, “Can I have some?”

dk-choc-muddy-buddy-5True story:  A ton of my friends tell me Halloween is their favorite holiday.  But me?  Not so much.

In fact, I kind of hate Halloween.  I hate spending money on candy and coming up with costumes for my kids, and dealing with candy wrappers all over the house.

I do like passing out candy, though.  And I like the decorations.  But that’s about it.

It seems like Halloween is always hectic.  Is that just me?  Between the school parties for the kids, and trying to get everyone into their costumes, and get some actual dinner in them, and the trick-or-treating, and visiting the grandparents, and passing out candy… there is just a lot to do.  It’s always a busy night.

I mean, let’s face it, sometimes a girl needs a break.

Let me be more specific:  Sometimes, on Halloween, a mom needs 10 minutes to herself, so she doesn’t lose her cool.  We all know what that looks like, and it ain’t pretty.  It might be the scariest part of Halloween, actually.

Best Ever Chex Mix

My favorite chex mix; This chex mix recipe uses coconut, almonds, and other cereals to make the best tasting chex mix you’ll ever have!

chex mix recipe

Do you drink much Kool-Aid?  Me neither.  I’ve never been a huge fan of the stuff.   On the other hand, my kids get tired of drinking water, and I get tired of shelling out for milk and single-serving drinks.  I found a sweet sale + coupon price of $.07 per packet on the Kool-Aid, so I went nuts and bought 45 packages, 5 each of 9 different flavors.

I learned something interesting by doing this. Did you know that a 13-year-old is perfectly capable of making a pitcher full of Kool-Aid, but completely incapable of cleaning up the mess? I always know when offspring #2 has been making Kool-Aid, because I find the following items on the kitchen counter:

– Empty drink packet, torn into two pieces
– Container of sugar
– Measuring Cup
– Pitcher of Kool-Aid
– Empty cup with traces of Kool-Aid in it

And so, Kool-Aid has surprisingly become a tool for teaching my son responsibility.  Son: “Mom, can I make Kool-Aid?”  Me:  “Last time, that didn’t work out too well for me.”  He is now pointing out to me that he cleaned up his mess.  And I am responding by making him list every part of the mess that he believes he cleaned up.
